One role · one thousand applications

The best three
out of a thousand

Not the best three you had time to read properly. One recruiter, one Senior Program Manager (Supply Chain) role, a thousand applications. Here is what she actually looked at, what her client saw, and why the man going to a face-to-face interview on Thursday came 41st on paper.

Every screen below is real and clickable, on invented data. Nothing here is a mockup. Go and press the buttons.

What one role looks like now

1,000 applied she reads 15 13 record answers 6 to the client 3 interviews

She read fifteen CVs instead of a thousand. All thousand got read against the same list, at the same standard, in the same hour. Not CV twelve on Monday morning against CV seven hundred and eighty at nine at night. Same attention, all the way down.

Why she is sure about the three

All fifteen answered the same six questions. Same clock, one retake each. So she is comparing like with like, not a good phone call on Tuesday against a rushed one late on Thursday.

CandidateOn paperOnce they spokeGoing forward
Tom A.41st on keywords4thface-to-face
Grace L.1st on keywords5thpresented
Nadia F.4th on keywords2ndheld back

Tom came 41st on his CV. His resume says team leader, not program manager, so the keyword screen pushed him down. It also says he ran the supplier transition across eleven sites. Nobody rings candidate forty-one. She never would have, and neither would you, and he is the one her client is seeing on Thursday.

Nadia scored higher than three of the six who went forward, and she is not going. A person read the transcript, saw her strongest answer was about a job she left in 2019, and held her. The system put her up. It does not get to decide.

And it says when somebody stopped

One candidate answered two of the six questions and stopped. He shows as 2 of 6. Not scored, not presented, not chased. That is a fact about him, not a gap in the list.

What her client sees

Her client wrote the six questions. So when the answers come back, they are answers to what he actually wanted to know, not to a recruiter's standard set.

He does not wait a week for her write-up and then take her word for it. He gets the six, and if he wants to know how the third one handles a difficult client, he watches her say it. In her own face, in her own words.

Then he tells her which three he wants to meet.

What the candidate gets

Six questions. Ninety seconds, ninety, sixty, sixty, forty-five, forty-five. One retake each. Six and a half minutes of talking, at the kitchen table, at nine at night, instead of a sick day for a ten o'clock phone call.

Current and expected salary go in a form before recording opens, because nobody should burn forty-five seconds of their answer saying a number.

The last question is what made you apply for this one. It is the only thing a CV cannot carry, and it is the answer that moved Tom from 41st to 4th.

Nothing moves without her

It reads a thousand and puts fifteen up. It scores thirteen and puts six up. Both of those are suggestions sitting in a queue. She approved every one, and she overruled it twice on this role alone. One of those overrules worked. The other finished last, and it is still in there.
